Corneal Tissue Engineering

Early work has been initiated to assemble three- dimensional cultures consisting of multiple layers of keratocytes cultured on biodegradable polymeric scaffolds to investigate the ability of these cells to create a stromal tissue matrix in vitro. The goal of Institute researchers is to develop a corneal equivalent from immortalized cell lines or stem cell derivatives to serve as a model system for inflammation and drug testing and, ultimately, as a tissue construct suitable for transplantation.
