The McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine extends a warm welcome to the delegates to the G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh.
The McGowan Institute, committed to advancing the science and the clinical implementation of regenerative therapies, organizes the talents and expertise of the many “scientists…making advances in tissue regeneration, which will help people across the globe, including our troops wounded in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan,” as referenced by President Obama in his September 8, 2009, statement on G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh.
In support of injured troops and citizens worldwide, the McGowan Institute is leading the way in the research on tissue engineering, cell therapy, and medical devices that are the key pillars in the development of regenerative therapies that seek to repair diseased or damaged tissue and organs, vs. the current approaches of treating the symptoms or using artificial devices. Several of our faculty’s accomplishments were featured in recent press coverage:
Drs. Stephen Badylak, W. P. Andrew Lee, Andrew Schwartz, Massimo Trucco, and Marco Zenati: Pittsburghers forge ahead on cutting edge (Pittsburgh Tribune Review)
Type 1 diabetes (Trucco), hand transplantation (Lee), limb regeneration (Badylak), vision (Dr. Joel Schuman and General Major (ret.) Gale Pollock), pediatric transplantation (Drs. George Mazariegos and Peter Wearden: Pittsburgh evolves into international leader in health-care research (Pittsburgh Tribune Review)

The McGowan Institute is a partnership between the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). The Institute is a consortium of 240 scientists, engineers, and clinicians committed to advancing the science and the clinical implementation of regenerative therapies. This multidisciplinary team, and their respective staffs and trainees, comprises over 2,000 people committed to making a paradigm shift in the way that we treat disease and injury.
The UPMC G-20 Media Room provides an excellent overview of the regional impact, global reach, advances in patient care, and excellence in research as a result of the pioneering medical programs in Pittsburgh.
